Chicago Bare's Witness Collection

A companion to the Gaza Heritage collection — work made here in Little Palestine that bears witness to what is being erased there. Where the heritage wing records the sites, this wing records the response: collective and collaborative paintings answering memory with memory, grief with color, and silence with insistence.

Twilight in Joy — Collective work by 6 Artists

Twilight in Joy

Collective · 6 Artists

At the peak of Hinds Meadow, beauty and joy were omnipresent, creating an idyllic setting for a transformative experience. Six campers, who had just recently met, came together around a blank canvas to engage in an exercise of collective painting, guided by the flow of consciousness. The storm that occurred that night, washing away parts of the painting, serves as a powerful metaphor for external challenges and adversities that impact the community. The painting, left in its “true form” after the rain, symbolizes resilience and the inherent beauty of authenticity — through adversity, the essence of the community’s collective spirit is revealed.

Gaza Mockingbird

طائر غزة المحاكي

Collective & Collaborative · 5 Artists — Completed June 2024

Mockingbirds replicate what they hear; they take in the audio of their surroundings, like a sponge, and amplify. The Mockingbirds of Gaza bear witness to things which they can only see, and echo. We remember when the air was crisp, the sea’s life was bountiful, the trees were full of fruit while the leaves shielded the nests beneath from a storm. The Mockingbirds flew to gather food, and stopped to rest for a while. But the skies began to darken, and they couldn’t seem to find any trees to rest once again.

Azadee

أزادي

Collective · 5 Artists

During a recent session, a community member expressed deep sorrow and grief. Artists left a community forum where they felt misplaced and anxious. The facilitator chose a random color, and a majority had never painted. The facilitator provided a supportive embrace and validated their feelings, then gently led them to use art as an expressive outlet. At first they began individually, and then after an artist asked if they could paint in another space, it flowed and all participated. Then came the question, “why don’t we rotate the canvas around?” — all agreed and collectively rotated. They were free: hura, azadee, libre — and nothing could go wrong.

Collective Liberation — Collective work by 10 Artists

Collective Liberation

Collective · 10 Artists

Palestinians — from children, to youth, to adults — gathered around the piece in Detroit, visualizing the tunnel to liberation, the tunnel vision all those within the struggle possess to achieve liberation. Their hands, moving side by side with pigments and textures, was an experiential learning workshop in practicing the trade of liberation together. As a collective, we returned to each other and painted our future return to our homeland of Palestine. The birds of Palestine will fly free in unity above the sea.

Eye on Rafah — Collaborative work by Thaer & Kandi

May 27, 2024

Eye on Rafah

Collaborative · Thaer & Kandi

We heard the news, and asked the world to bear witness to the atrocities committed in Rafah. The world watches as fathers pull their children from the rubble of their family homes, and we ask: where are the people of the world? Why does the world continue to watch our slaughter yet stay silent? The colorful eye represents the global world, from all different backgrounds, who are standing and fighting for Gaza. The movement needs you, every individual, to play an important role, and we will unite to ensure a liberated future for seeds.

Hell in Rafah

Collaborative · 2 Artists

On 28 May 2024, Gaza emergency services reported that four tank artillery shells struck tent shelters in Al-Mawasi, Rafah. At least 21 people were killed, 12 of whom were women, and 64 people were injured, including 10 in critical condition. In the West, the images broadcast on our screens turned the brush into a witness. Let the emotions from this genocide push you to come together and organize to demand the genocide end and justice for our people. We will honor all our Martyrs. All our Children. Sons and daughters. Free the People. Free the Land. Palestine is our Demand.

Artist Revolt — Collaborative work by 2 Artists

Artist Revolt

Collaborative · 2 Artists

Resistance in Palestine stems through our culture and the love we have rooted in our land. As artists, we must preserve history because art holds truth and evokes our ancestral bonds. The artist revolt is an uprising that decolonizes the creative mind and allows the resistance to express and think creatively toward a collective liberation. Within this piece is the remembrance of all our martyrs — with every stroke and color, “we think about you all of the time.” The centered triangle represents the resistance in the struggle for the liberation of Palestine and the bottom-up, grassroots approach required to achieve it.

Hinds Meadow — Collective & Collaborative work by 20 Artists

Hinds Meadow

Collective & Collaborative · 20 Artists

This collaborative piece began at Hind’s Meadow, a peaceful, wooded space along Lake Michigan, liberated and loved by the Evanston community in honor of the child Martyr, Hind Rajab — may she rest in Paradise. During the courageous walkout for Northwestern graduation, students and family members took poppy seeds and wrote the destination of the place they plan to plant the poppy in honor of Gaza and our martyrs. The world has become Falasteen. Soon later, individuals from the Evanston community came together to add to the piece.

Little Palestine and her Children — Collective Event work by 45 Artists of all ages

Little Palestine and her Children

Collective Event · 45 Artists of all ages

Eid Al-Adha — the second Eid during the Gaza Genocide — brought a lot of pain, grief, and remembrance for our martyrs. Al Hub set up an art tent outside The Qahwa, in the heart of Little Palestine, where anyone of any age could come and have the freedom to paint. The majority of children asked to start with the color black, reflecting their internal grief; volunteers encouraged them to break away, and slowly, as the kids began creating without rules, their creativity shined and pushed through their comfort zones. The children of Falasteen are our future, and Al Hub’s goal is to show children that they can and will be the change. It’s important to center our youth and vocalize their voices to preserve the legacy of Falasteen.

In our Thousand, In our Millions

Collective & Collaborative · 20 Artists

This piece was started in Little Palestine at The Qahwa during an art build for Falasteen with our youth. Kids of all ages gathered together and worked collaboratively on a blank canvas, encouraged to let their creativity flow — it is important for our children to express themselves during this genocide and connect with the Palestinian community. From there, a collective of artists came together at Alley Cat Studios and added to this piece, showing the generational progression and different age groups that worked on it. You’ll find a lot of hidden pieces within it in remembrance of Gaza and all its martyrs.

Soul of the Soul — Collective & Collaborative work by 15 Artists

Soul of the Soul

روح الروح

Collective & Collaborative · 15 Artists

Women are on the frontlines of the resistance; draped in keffiyehs, our daughters and mothers have fought for centuries against the zionist regime. Palestine is a mother waiting for her children to return home to her, together and united. The lines all connect and show how all Palestinians are interconnected and resistant to the border walls that have separated families. Without discussing or planning, the artists began to paint from their hearts, and the art flew out of their hands effortlessly — almost as if they were subconsciously sharing stories as they created collectively. This painting, as a whole, is like a map of layered emotions, each layer telling a story with the next. When creating in a collective, there is no such thing as making a mistake, because as a community we keep each other afloat and safe.

Gaza Keeps Bleeding — Collective & Collaborative work by 10 Artists

Gaza Keeps Bleeding

Collective & Collaborative · 10 Artists

A collective and collaborative work bearing witness to the relentless toll of the genocide — grief and resilience layered together on the canvas as a record of a wound that will not close. Gaza keeps bleeding, and the community keeps showing up to name it.

Heal Palestine — Collective work by 25+ Palestinian Youth and Children

August 2024

Heal Palestine

Collective · 25+ Palestinian Youth and Children

The youth and community at the Arab Chicago Farm have observed that, when given the opportunity to paint in collective, Palestinians of all ages will almost immediately use the colors black and red. Black is associated with death and loss; red with anger and violence. The colors quickly run out. After excessive use of those two colors — or a guided pivot — white, blue, and green are sought after: blue for calmness, green for renewal and growth, white for purity. It’s clear that we need to “purge” the darkness and horror being imposed on us and our people. I encourage parents to paint with their children; they need you to paint with them, and to let it all out, together. On the journey to return amidst genocide, let’s heal so we may proceed in clarity. Until Return.

Gaza Fountain — Collective & Collaborative work by Chicago Community

Gaza Fountain

Collective & Collaborative · Chicago Community

Art experiences — we can respond to them as fully aesthetic experiences. We ourselves are the artworks. Engaging with our five senses and all the art forms — visual, music, drama, poetry, prose — the Collective Expressive Arts become a conscious dialogue, a quest in the approach to the “Artistic Vision.” Students and community members united once again after the fall of Chicago’s university encampments and aspired to liberate Buckingham Fountain, Chicago, with the protection of the Palestinian community. As police raided, community members surrounded the camp and the students until they were finished painting. The camp was taken down, with the piece salvaged. Even among animosity, this quest can take you directly where the pain is and manifest a new understanding of how to allow our pain to be expressed and contained within a community.

Arab World Expo — Collective work by 5 Artists

Arab World Expo

Our students deserve the world — the just world they are fighting for. At Saint Xavier University, SJP showcased local talents in the quad, from henna by Sahara Henna Designs to singers Eddy Mack and Norhan. The students remain staunch in their thobes and in the streets; our culture is all we have left to cling to in a time when we are being silenced. When spraypaint appeared, PALESTINE — in its many shapes and forms — appeared as well. The most authentic art comes resisting the status quo; the writing of graffiti is inherently a political act. The crime is insubordination — reacting against those who make the rules. GAZA GAZA WE WILL RISE… LONG LIVE PALESTINE.

Valley of Arab — Collective work by 15 Artists — Arab Student Union, Moraine Valley Community College

October 15, 2024

Valley of Arab

Collective · 15 Artists — Arab Student Union, Moraine Valley Community College

This artwork was completed by a collective of students with the Arab Student Union at Moraine Valley Community College. It depicts Palestinians longing to return, and even though we look out to a horizon of uncertainty, we are determined to rebuild it. Five Arab youth played a pivotal role in laying the foundation for this beautiful piece, symbolizing the strength and unity within the community. From their efforts, the Valley emerged — representing not just a physical space but a shared vision of hope, resilience, and cultural identity. Palestine will be free, and so will Lebanon, Sudan, Syria, Yemen, Blad al Sham… the whole Arab World. Inshallah!
